The Endless Caravan
The Endless Caravan travels from city to city via the portal system, typically staying for about a week. It visits about fifty cities around the planet each year before visiting a city for a second time. Some people join and some leave at each city, so the mix of people and goods is constantly changing. The Caravan is a source of tremendous wealth for the cities it visits, since it effectively provides a global, year round market for goods. Many merchants or craftsmen will travel with the Caravan for three or four years to make their fortune. Virtually all the cities visited are Godborn ones, and the merchants themselves are of similar compostion. There is a semi-permanent group of administrators known as the Triad that runs the Caravan.
Merchants are charged a fee to be part of the Caravan. There are very few guards, since they never have to travel on roads and are thus not in danger from brigands, and when in cities are protected by their forces. The caravan gets special discount rates going through the portals, and most of the big trade cities have a market square right next to their portals for it. It is typically quite large, and requires a couple dozen trips through the portal for a complete journey. The Caravan’s ability to move easily through the portal system also makes it an appealing haven for smugglers.
